AITSL Standards
Standard 4: Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments.
4.1 Support student participation: Identify strategies to support inclusive student participation and engagement in classroom activities.
When meeting young learner, I spend some time talking to them, while they play. I spend the first couple of weeks gathering information through observations and simple diagnostic assessments, such as cutting skills, recognizing their name, and pencil grip. I also assess their social skills and ability to work with, or alongside, their peers. I have taught students where English is their second language (ESL) and other students who had been diagnosed as being on the Autism Spectrum. When working with students how have extra needs, I start by doing one to one intention. I get to know the families well and find out what interest and strengths the students have and where the students need additional support at home. I aim to build each students confidence, to accomplish this I modify the work so that each student can achieve their own level of success. For my students with extra needs I use visual time table, so they know what activities they doing each day. I use trial and error techniques, because different approaches work for different students. If something did not work today, that does not mean it won’t work tomorrow.
